Western NY Child Jails

by Kellyd

This page is all about roadside school bus stops that I've seen in the Western New York area. I am utterly fascinated by them. I've always called them "child jails", because they seem so isolated and sad. While parents may think they are doing their kid a favor by making him a little hut to shield him from the elements while waiting the schoolbus, the shoddiness of the construction makes them look like depressing little shacks. They have an almost Dickensian orphanage type thing going, and I can just see tiny little oliver twist like kiddies shivering away in the early hours of the winter. I also cannot help but wonder how often the children are banished to the shack even when the bus isn't coming. A kid gets sassy at the dinner table, he's sent outside to sit in the jail and think about it.

This seems to be a multi-family child jail. It is at the entrance to a trailer park on Rt. 60 in Fredonia.

A rare installation, seen in the village of Fredonia. Usually the ones I see are in more rural areas. I bet some serious pre-dance drinking goes on in this one.

Why do these people insist on adding shrubbery? Does the kid have to do the pruning? The curtains are a nice touch. Almost like your parents love you.

I'm surprised there aren't more child jails with religious iconography. I bet Carrie White would have had one like this.

This is one of the saddest ones, in my opinion. Why bother with the round window. Like these kids have any hope.
